Report from Fun Factory for Frisbee by Jean McCollister
The second edition of Fun Factory for Frisbee is in the books. Organizers Lucka and Miguel did a heroic job of pulling off the event successfully despite having to scramble to find a new location at the last minute. The fields and facilities at the Dobřejovice Football Club turned out to be more than adequate for hosting two days of ultimate frisbee, disc golf, double disc court, freestyle frisbee, and of course dogfrisbee, the sport of primary interest to our readers.
In Starters’ Freestyle, the results were very close, with the top three final scores within half a point of one another. Alena Hricová and her Dutch shepherd Gepp were the winners, followed by Dominika Stárková and Bessie in 2nd place and Jitka Pilátová and Nastěnka in 3rd.
In Super Pro Toss & Fetch, Josef (Pepa) Honner and Amálka, leaders after the first round, were poised to win right up until the last throw, which was perfectly placed in the highest scoring zone. A catch would have put them on top by half a point, but this time Amálka, who rarely misses, miscalculated the timing of the leap and came down without the disc. Thus Olivia and I, through a combination of skill and luck, managed to pull off a win. We had a strong second round of 23.5 points, including two five-point catches, and racked up a total of 45 points. Pepa and Amálka were second with 41 points, and Bamm Bamm and I were third, with 40.5 points.
Olivia and I also won the Open Freestyle, finishing just slightly ahead of Lucka Schönová and Dixi, who turned in the best individual freestyle of the weekend, on Sunday (52.92 points). Jakub Stybr and Putee were third, thereby also qualifying for the Czech Championship to be held in September. All three top teams, in addition to strong freestyle performances, had perfect minidistance scores. Other new qualifiers for the Czech Championship were me and Bamm Bamm (4th place), Michaela Andrová and Annakim (5th place), Tereza Brožková and Loty (6th place), and Zuzka Řezaninová and Jonáš, who gained their invitation with an impressive freestyle score of 51.12 on Sunday, the highest freestyle score among the teams not already qualified.
In both freestyle categories, the second rounds on Sunday were on the whole noticeably better than the first, due no doubt to Saturday’s strong winds. Otherwise, the weather through the weekend was almost perfect for dogfrisbee, not too hot, just an occasional drop of rain despite forecasts of thunderstorms, and practically windless on Sunday. Maybe just a little cold for the beer race on Saturday night. ;)
